Varsity Baseball Dominates SAISD Tournament with Perfect 4-0 Sweep
SAN ANTONIO — The Varsity baseball team left no doubt who owned the diamond this past weekend, marching through the SAISD Tournament to a flawless 4-0 record. Emerging as the only undefeated team in the entire tournament field, the squad combined a high-octane offense with disciplined pitching to outscore opponents by a staggering 36–13 margin over the four-game stretch.
The weekend was defined by a relentless pace that began with a Thursday double-header. The team opened the tournament with an explosive 13–6 victory over SA Roosevelt before immediately shifting gears to dismantle SA Burbank 11–3.
By Friday, the narrative shifted from raw power to defensive poise. In a tightly contested matchup against South San, the team showed veteran discipline to secure a 5–2 win. They punctuated the weekend on Saturday morning, completing the clean sweep with a convincing 7–2 win over SA Jay.
Standout Performers Anchored the Sweep
While the coaching staff emphasized that every player on the roster contributed to the perfect weekend, several individuals delivered "Player of the Week" caliber performances:
Domenic Basile (#3): A true dual-threat force. Basile was an extra-base hit machine, racking up multiple doubles and a triple. He transitioned to the mound on Saturday to anchor the defense, racking up six strikeouts against SA Jay.
Alejandro Ocana (#12): Serving as the team’s "spark plug," Ocana was a constant fixture on the basepaths. He tallied seven hits and six stolen bases, keeping opposing pitchers in a state of constant unrest.
Joseph Ulrich (#14): Ulrich provided the "muscle" in the middle of the order, recording five hits—including three doubles—and driving in key runs in every single contest.
Elijah Juarez (#21): Juarez proved his versatility by providing high-leverage innings on the mound and coming through with a clutch 2-RBI double against Burbank.
Vijay Mata (#23): Mata provided the highlight of the tournament with a towering home run to left field against Burbank, finishing the weekend with four RBIs.
JV Squad Shows Grit in Local Action
The Junior Varsity squad also saw significant action this weekend, demonstrating the program's depth. The highlight of the JV slate was a dominant 12–1 victory over Lee. Maddox Navarro (#12) controlled the game from the rubber, while John Cabasos (#24) provided the offensive spark with a massive 2-RBI double that broke the game open.
Other JV standouts included Tyler Granado (#7), who shined on the corners and at the plate with a clutch 2-RBI single, and Xavier Garcia (#29), who utilized disciplined plate appearances to spark aggressive baserunning rallies. Rory Woodard (#18) and Aden Saenz (#2) both contributed multi-hit games to round out a successful weekend for the younger squad.
As the teams return to campus this week, students and faculty are encouraged to congratulate these athletes on their dominant performance and their status as the SAISD Tournament’s lone undefeated champions.
