The Veterans Memorial Patriots displayed heart and determination on Friday night, battling a tough Alamo Heights Mules squad on the road. Despite a final score of 62-7, the Patriots showed flashes of potential and maintained a positive attitude throughout the contest at Alamo Heights High School. The loss moves the Patriots' overall record to 2-5 and their district record to 0-3.
The Patriots fought hard in the first quarter against a high-powered Mules offense. After Alamo Heights opened the scoring with a long 75-yard touchdown pass, the Patriots immediately answered. Quarterback MJ Sparks powered his way into the end zone on an 8-yard touchdown run, and the extra point from Ben Fink gave the Patriots the 7-6 lead.
However, the Mules quickly regained momentum and their offense proved difficult to slow down for the remainder of the game, pulling away throughout the second half. The Mules' defense also made a play in the third quarter, forcing a safety that moved their lead to 35-7.
While the result was not what the team hoped for, the Patriots showed resilience and the ability to punch back early in the game. They will now focus on using the lessons learned as they prepare for their next district challenge.
The Patriots return home for their next district game against Boerne on Thursday, October 23, at D.W. Rutledge Stadium.
